Goodbye to one fine Gentlecat

I am very sorry to report the passing of the sweet Kismet - a kitty with such big, expressive eyes, fur as sleek as a seal, and a soft and gentle soul.

I loved the times I had the honor to cat-sit with Froggy, Mousey and Kismet. Kismet was always such a little love - coming over to me with a purr as loud as a motorboat. Giving me his little "Kismet kisses" on my hand. He would run enthusiastically to his dinner bowl and chant his little "meows" while waiting patiently for his meal to be prepared.

Our thoughts go out to Kismet's wonderful family. He was a big kitty with a big personality. I can only imagine how much you must be missing him.

Kitties Kitties Everywhere!!!

I've been a bad blogger. And it's not that fun things haven't been happening. It may be that TOO many fun things have been happening and I just forgot to post all the pics!

First - Steve and I had the pleasure of hosting Johnny, Fritz and Katie for a few days in July.

Johnny is on a very low dose of insulin and was SUCH a good boy having his blood sugar test taken 2ce a day and getting his insulin shots. Here's Johnny being handsome:

Here's Katie Cat being super-cute as usual. She was not a happy camper getting into her carrier to come over, but once here, she settled down and loved relaxing on the window sill overlooking the city.

And of course, Mr. Fritz being his lovable self!

Remembering Geoffrey

It's hard to believe it's been a year.

Dear, sweet Geoffrey - I think of you running and playing at the Rainbow Bridge with Razzle and all your hedgie friends. Every now and again, you look in on your mom and dad to remind them you are still with them in spirit. You might take the form of a beautiful flower, a familiar smell, perhaps a hummingbird. The love you shared will never die.

Goodbye to a Faithful Friend

November 28, 1996 - February 26, 2010

A very sad day today as my sister and niece said goodbye to their sweet black lab, B.J.

B.J. was the largest pet in the household, and also the most gentle. During his lifetime, he befriended several cats, bunnies, hamsters, lizards, various other reptiles (I can't even keep track...), and even two pheasants. He tolerated some psychotic cat behavior (Mittens! Keifer!) without as much as a complaint. He would just look at you with those big brown eyes. He swam in waters from coast to coast. He's had big yards to run and play. He was always so well cared for and loved, right up to his last moments this morning.

Thank goodness there are people like my sister and niece who love and care for animals they way they do.

B.J. will be missed but never, ever forgotten.

Penelope & Shakespeare!

Well, I have been lazy on my blog as of late. I have so much to catch up on. But first, let me start with The Adventures of Shy Shakespeare and Pretty Penelope!

I have the honor of looking after this dynamic duo. As you may recall from a few months back, poor timid Shakespeare was no where to be found the last time I looked after him. Since then, there has been a new addition to the household - Miss Penelope, who is quite the social butterfly!

Now the last time I came to check in on Shakespeare, all I saw were his bowls.

However I found his hiding spot in the closet!

If you look close, you can spot him!

I didn't want to startle the poor boy, so I just let him know that there was food and fresh water for him when and if he so chose to come out. Penelope came over to investigate, and just then Shakespeare leapt from his hiding spot and scurried around for a bit, before retreating into the bathroom.

Nobody will find me here!

Still - I think it was a good sign that Shakespeare felt comfortable enough to come out from the closet. I think Penelope has some work cut out for her in getting Mr. Shakespeare over his social phobia.

If anyone can do it, it's me!

Aww, Snowball! I feel your pain!

With Christmas just around the corner, many of us will pile on a few festive pounds, but it would take a substantial Christmas feast to outdo Snowball the hedgehog.

Too much of a good life eating dog food has taken its toll on the overweight albino hedgehog, whose weight is three times what is normal for his species.

Snowball currently tips the scales at 1.5 kilograms - a normal hedgehog weighs just 500 grams.

His eating began to threaten his health, and St Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital in Buckinghamshire was called in to help him shed the extra weight.

Staff at St Tiggywinkles have placed him on a diet of low-fat kitten biscuits and are getting his heart pumping through running and swimming sessions.

Only one in 10,000 hedgehogs is born albino, so Snowball was already quite a rare find even before his weight ballooned.

A member of the public took Snowball to the hospital in October.

St Tiggywinkles founder Les Stocker said Snowball was in for a long rehabilitation.

'He has been eating a lot of dog food,' he said. 'People put it out for hedgehogs and given half a chance they just eat and eat and eat.'

Snowball has so far shed 38 grams. He will remain in training at the hospital until the summer, when he will be released into a protected area for other albinos of his breed.

She hissed. She stayed away from playtime activities. She growled. Finally, I lured her out with the secret weapon: "mouse on a string". But things didn't turn around the way I had hoped.

Everyone is enjoying a relaxing evening while I bake yummy pumpkin and gingerbread goodies for Thanksgiving. Fritz has been Steve's buddy - coming over to rub around his feet and jumping in his lap. I am sooo jealous! Steve says it is because he is "cool like a cat" and isn't fawning over them the way I do. I am trying to stay "cool" and not bug the cats, but they are so darn cute I just can't help going over to see what they are doing; or want to pick them up and have them cuddle with me on the couch. SIGH!

It's hard to believe it's been two years since Razzle's passing. Although I will always miss my sweet little boy, it's so nice to be able to think back on all the great memories Razzle left behind. It's also nice to be cat sitting three wonderfully cute and playful little kitties this week! They are so entertaining and keep Steve and I laughing with their cute little antics, much like Razzle always did. I will never forget Razzle's annoyed little huffs and the dagger stare to match that would make me laugh out loud. Or the way he would run really, really fast on the wheel when Steve was around, as if to say, "I'm the man of the house, and don't you forget it!" I'll never forget how he would look at me with those big eyes when I held him, and how a soft voice and my nose to his would instantly calm down even the spikiest of quills.

Razzle, please give your little brother Geoffrey a kiss and snuggle from us too. I know you are both ok now - happy, healthy and running free. I hope you check in every once in a while and know that you are both still very much loved and missed, and always will be.

Happy Birthday, my sweet prickly pumpkin! We are thinking about you today, and hoping you are celebrating with us. We have a special night planned, and have three surprise guests that will be staying with us for a week! One of the guests has stayed with us before....the ever enchanting FRITZ the cat! Tonight he brings with him his big brother, Johnny, and sister Katie! We are so excited to have all three kitties stay with us. What a great way to celebrate Razzle's birthday!

2009 Marks the End of the Gas Chamber for Cats and Dogs in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (June 1, 2009) — The Humane Society of the United States, on behalf of its more than 448,000 supporters in Illinois, commends the state’s General Assembly for passing legislation at the close of the session banning the use of carbon monoxide gas chambers in shelters and animal control facilities. The new law also bans the use of carbon monoxide gas as a form of euthanasia statewide, so puppy mills will no longer be able to use make-shift gas chambers using engine exhaust.

"The Illinois legislature has spoken clearly that in those unfortunate situations where an animal must be euthanized, they deserve that it be done humanely,” said Jordan Matyas, Illinois state director for The HSUS. “The use of the gas chamber is less humane, more expensive, and more time consuming than the use of lethal injection. While we work towards the day when euthanasia of healthy animals is no longer necessary, we are grateful to state Representative John Fritchey and Senator Heather Steans for their commitment to this important issue.“

This legislation has been debated for two years, and was passed with the support of more than 40 shelters and rescue groups across the state. After extensive negotiations, the final bill includes a provision that allows veterinarians to conditionally use the gas chamber with strict limitations.

Dear, sweet Geoffrey peacefully passed over the Rainbow Bridge this afternoon... surrounded by his loving mom, his warm blankies, and memories of a very happy life.

I am so very fortunate to have met Geoffrey less than a week ago. He was, and always will be, a very special little soul. There is definitely a very strong feeling that there has been a shift in the universe; that something is just a bit different; that Geoffrey may not be *here*, but that the world is a better place because he was. He left behind his wonderful parents, Nikki and Steve, who adored him more than can be expressed in words.

After hearing the news, I was not much good here at work, and so I left the office to go outside to collect my thoughts. It's a warm, beautiful day today - reminiscent of Razzle's last day on Earth. Even the air has the same scent. It struck me that today is Thursday, same day of the week Razzle passed. It is also 5/7, and Razzle passed on 7/5. Coincidence, perhaps. But I do believe that Razzle and Geoffrey are now together, wheeling and playing, happy and healthy, telling each other stories and meeting new friends. It's nice to take comfort in that they will always be together.

Thank you, Geoffrey, for the honor of meeting you and for bringing such joy to so many people, most especially your mom and dad. It was because of you that Steve and I were lucky enough to meet Nikki and Steve, and between us all your memory will always be kept alive. Perhaps that was your plan all along.

Geoffrey, "Razzle's little brother"

This past weekend, Steve and I were honored to be able to meet "Razzle's little brother" Geoffrey and his wonderful parents, Nikki and Steve, in Toronto!

It was so wonderful to finally meet them all, and so exciting to hold sweet little Geoffrey, who reminds me so much of Razzle. Geoffrey used to be a very timid boy, but he was quite the social butterfly on this evening. He came out to greet me and showed me how he ate worms and beetles. He crawled in and out of his hedgie bag and let me pick him up. He was just a little doll.

Unfortunately, Geoffrey's health has been declining the past few months as he nears his fourth birthday (June 6). Four years old is considered quite elderly in hedgehog years. Geoffrey has always been a very healthy boy, but his Mom has noticed he has been slowing down quite a bit. Over the past couple of days now, Geoffrey has practically stopped eating on his own and has had to be syringe-fed. I am keeping fingers, toes and quills crossed for my sweet little nephew. I am sick with worry about him. I asked Razzle to please watch over him and give him strength to regain his health.

Nikki gave me a small glass bottle with some of Geoffrey's quills so a part of him could be near his big brother, Razzle. I can't think of anything sweeter than this. I held those quills last night and wished with all my might that Geoffrey is back to his happy, healthy self once again.

NATION'S FIRST PET ONLY AIRLINE WILL BEGIN FULL SCHEDULE IN JULY

April 16, 2009: Pet Airways today announced that it will launch the first pet-only airline specifically designed for the safe and comfortable transportation of pets, with the first pet flights scheduled for July 14, 2009. On Pet Airways, all pets travel in the main cabin not in the cargo hold.

Serving five cities to start - New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles - Pet Airways plans to expand nationwide with easily accessible pet check-in lounges to serve its "pawsengers" in major metropolitan areas.

A proprietary web-enabled reservation system will allow customers to book pet travel on the web. Owners will b e able to track their pet's travel progress online at http://petairways.com/

According to Dan Wiesel, president/CEO of Pet Airways: "Currently, most pets traveling by air are transported in the cargo hold and are handled as baggage. The experience is frightening to the pets, and can cause severe emotional and physical harm, even death. This is not what most pet owners want to subject their pets to, but they have had no other choice, until now."

Background on Pet Travel

According to the American Animal Hospital Association, approximately 76 million cats and dogs travel with their owners each year.

Despite the high number of pets traveling, relatively few currently travel by air. This is not surprising, considering the conditions under which most pets must travel. Many airlines allow small pets to travel with their owners, stowed under the seat, but most airlines will only accept one or two pets per flight. Pets that are too big to fit under the seat are relegated to cargo, and unfortunately in many cases, are treated as such.

Recently, several airlines announced they will no longer accept pets on board their aircraft. . In addition, airlines that do accept pets as cargo will not accept them when outside temperatures are below 45 degrees or above 85 degrees, or in other words, during the most popular winter holiday or summer vacation months. Pet parents should=2 0be aware that a cargo hold can quickly reach temperatures over 120 degrees.

"Travel can be a very noisy and scary experience," says Patty Hegwood, animal care director for Best Friends Animal Society, one of the nation8 0s best known animal welfare organizations. "It is incredible that there are folks like Pet Airways who are committed to safe air travel for animals. This will be a real benefit to pet owners and shelter/rescue organizations that transport animals on
a regular basis."

Pet owners who want to transport their pets across the country are faced with
limited or dangerous transportation choices.

A study by the San Francisco SPCA, found that of the two million animals transported in the cargo holds of commercial airliners per year, approximately 5,000 are injured in transit.

According to the Animal, Plant and Health Inspection Service (APHIS), "virtually every major airline has been cited and fined for repeatedly mishandling animals". As a result of a lack of oxygen and temperature control in the cargo holds, the most common causes of death are suffocation and heat prostration, although one airline was cited for placing a dog too close to a motor, which burned the animal.

Put simply, passenger airlines are not a safe mode of transportation for our pets.

Last night, Steve and I attended a fund raising event to benefit Felines, Inc.. Felines Inc. is a licensed cageless, no-kill cat shelter located on the north side of Chicago. We met wonderful Abby Smith, the Executive Director at Felines, who organized this really fun event. Despite the torrential rain storms, quite a few fellow feline friends were in attendance and ready to Putt for Purrs!

As a not-for-profit 501(c)(3), Felines Inc. is funded almost entirely through membership, adoption fees, fundraising events, and the generous tax-deductible donations of caring individuals. They do not receive any federal or state funding.

A great time for a great cause. We will definitely be attending more benefits for Felines, Inc.

Well, Valentine's day is OVER, folks.

Mousey was not in a good mood tonight, and it appeared the boys just annoyed her even further. After a delicious dinner of "tender beef", she gave a few hisses and ran and hid for a while. I think it was best she was alone. Kismet plopped down and relaxed on the rug, while Froggy enjoyed a sprightly game of "catch the string!"

Happy Friday the 13th!! We had a very low-key and relaxing evening tonight. When I walked in the door, I got the look of, "Oh, you again. Ok. You feed us. We accept you."

All three were ready for mealtime, and after a flawless recital of "The Raven" by Froggy in honor of Friday the 13th, dinner was served.

We got it right this time! No mishaps on the rug. :)

The Adventures of Froggy, Kismet and Mousey, Part I

Hi Maren & Rom ! Hope you guys are having a great time! Every thing is under control back home. Here's a window into what the little darlings were up to tonight.....

I was greeted by very enthusiastic meows. Everyone came out to greet me, including Mousey! I got a couple kisses (from Mousey) and some purrs (Kismet) and some lively chit-chat (Froggy). Kismet quickly found a great place to relax for a bit as I was prepared their dinner.

Dry food was served first, and Froggy and Kismet ate a bit and then went to relax. Mousey was hanging out in the wings waiting for the good stuff (i.e the wet cat food). I gave them each 1/3 of the can, making sure to put Mousey's in her own "room". The boys weren't interested in the wet food and were already out in the dining room digesting their meals.

We had a little down-time relaxing - because I'm sure they worked hard all day today. I let them know I would be back tomorrow evening. I asked the boys to please be nice to Mousey, as she needed to take it easy tonight. They agreed, as Mousey walked by and solidified the deal with a threatening Hissssssssssss. (Apparently she was feeling much better).

Five Fun Filled days with Fritz the Fabulously Friendly Feline!

Over the Thanksgiving week, Steve and I were the lucky cat sitters for FRITZ the Cat!! Fritz is the sweet kitty of Auntie Janice. How cute is he?

We had so much fun with him, and he was such a good boy. We just loved watching him roam around and explore. He also loved sleeping and relaxing and took "lounging" to a new level.

He also liked playing with his toys, particularly in his crinkle tunnel!

A Thanksgiving Tradition

Farm Sanctuary's Adopt A Turkey Project has become a holiday tradition in our house. Every year, Steve and I each sponsor a turkey that lives at the sanctuary. We receive a little card with our turkeys' picture, which is really cute. Thanksgiving is not a good time to be a turkey, unless you live at the Farm Sanctuary!

This week, Steve and I attended a seminar hosted by the Humane Society of the United States ("HSUS"). One of the biggest battles being fought by HSUS are the horrors of puppy mills. It was so hard to watch the videos they showed that night. Many people closed their eyes tightly and blocked their ears. Some people left the room. I knew what to expect, as I have seen these videos before, but it never gets easier to watch.

More Good News!

Wow, I've been a blogging fool as of late! But more good news on the animal front:

For those who watched Obama's victory speech last night, remember when he addressed his daughters and told them they would be getting the puppy he promised them? Well read on!

Earlier this year, rumors began circulating that the Obamas were planning to add a doggy addition to their family. Ingrid Newkirk, president of PETA, quickly penned a letter to Barack saying: “Senator, no one needs to tell you that this country is proud to be a melting pot and that there is something deeply wrong and elitist about wanting only a purebred dog. Millions of Great American Mutts—the dog that should be our national dog—are set to die in our nation’s extremely overcrowded pounds and shelters for lack of good homes. When you are ready, please adopt a homeless pound puppy—a grateful refugee from a society that has not always treated the true “underdog” kindly—rather than cater to special interests who do not have dogs’ interests at heart.”

Well it looks like the Obama family listened. Michelle Obama announced on Entertainment Tonight that her family was indeed planning to “adopt a rescue dog,” and we couldn’t be happier about it! It’s no surprise that Obama is making the responsible decision here, especially after he had a vegan moment earlier this summer.

All of us volunteers at City of Chicago Animal Control are beyond excited! It's just wonderful that they are adopting from a shelter, but wouldn't it be something if the Obama's adopted from the CACC!

Regardless of what shelter they adopt from, the Obama family’s decision to adopt will set a great example, and will result in many dogs and cats being saved from euthanasia across the country.

The People Have Spoken: YES! on Prop 2

Congratulations to animal protection advocates throughout the country for getting the word and the vote out for farm animals! In a historic victory, California voters have approved Proposition 2, a landmark measure that bans three of the cruelest factory farming confinement systems – battery cages, veal crates and gestation crates -- in the state by 2015. By a a vote of more than 60 percent Californians sent a clear message to big agribusiness that cruelty to animals is unacceptable.

With this historic vote, California becomes the fifth state to ban gestation crates, the third to ban veal crates and the first to ban battery cages!

While Prop 2 will curtail the suffering of millions of animals in California, the repercussions throughout the country promise to be even more profound: As California goes, so goes the rest of the nation. California’s new laws against farm animal cruelty hold the potential to spark an unstoppable precedent for change in the way farm animals are treated nationwide.

Battery cages - BANNED!
95% of the eggs in the US come from hens who are crammed five or more into a cage the size of a filing drawer, with each given less than the size of a piece of typing paper in which to live her life. Prevented from ever touching the ground or extended their wings, laying hens are among the most tortured of all farm animals.

However, with the passage of Prop 2, egg producers will be required to provide birds with enough space to comfortably turn around and spread their wings. – affecting the lives of almost 19 million animals.
Prop 2 will also end the confinement of pregnant sows inside gestation crates and calves inside veal crates. Although these operations are less prevalent in the state than factory egg farms, it will help the thousands of animals currently confined in them and prevent new factory farms from moving into the state.

Gestation crates - BANNED!
The majority of sows bred to provide piglets to the pork industry spend most of their lives inside gestation crates, 2-foot-wide metal enclosures that severely restrict the animals' movement and thwart their natural behaviors.

Veal crates - BANNED!
Crated veal calves are normally confined inside 2-foot-wide enclosures for their entire lives. Usually chained by their necks, these animals cannot even turn around, stretch their limbs, or lie down comfortably.

California’s passage of Prop 2 has monumental implications for farm animals and is likely to ignite a spark around the country. It has also helped raise the consciousness of millions of people nationwide to the plight of farm animals and helped tear down the veil of deception that the factory farming industry has used for so long to shield consumers from the truth of their cruelties.

Prop 2 was a modest proposal, simply asking that these animals receive the most basic considerations, yet its success prompts a dramatic shift in the public’s recognition that animals are sentient, deserving of protection and should not be treated as mere commodities.

California residents helped make it possible to get factory farming systems noticed by the entire country. From commercials across the state to appearances on national television programs, including Ellen and Oprah, animal advocates were able to spread the word to everyone with a television!

This exposure is a victory not only for the animals in California, but for farm animals across the country. As California sets this precedent to ban ALL three confinement systems, we can expect to see other states step up to the plate.

What Happens Now
Producers in California will have until 2015 to convert to more humane systems for hens, calves and gestating sows. But this is not the end: in fact, it is just the beginning. State legislatures around the country are about to begin their next legislative session – providing animal advocates with an opportunity to educate and advance policy similar to prop 2 in their state. Please take action by contacting your state legislators and urging them to introduce or support similar humane legislation in your state.

My birthday (October 18) fell on a Saturday, which entitled me to an entire BIRTHDAY WEEKEND! :) The thing I really wanted to do was go to a pumpkin patch, and Steve took me to two that I picked out.

The first one was Settler's Pond in Beecher, IL, which was not only a pumpkin patch, but a farm animal sanctuary!

GOOD! While I don't necessarily agree with everything in this article, I certainly don't think a hedgehog is a good pet for small children.

CHICAGO - Warning: young children should not keep hedgehogs as pets — or hamsters, baby chicks, lizards and turtles, for that matter — because of risks for disease.

That's according to the nation's leading pediatricians' group in a new report about dangers from exotic animals.

Besides evidence that they can carry dangerous and sometimes potentially deadly germs, exotic pets may be more prone than cats and dogs to bite, scratch or claw — putting children younger than 5 particularly at risk, the report says.

Young children are vulnerable because of developing immune systems plus they often put their hands in their mouths.

That means families with children younger than 5 should avoid owning "nontraditional" pets. Also, kids that young should avoid contact with these animals in petting zoos or other public places, according to the report from the American Academy of Pediatrics. The report appears in the October edition of the group's medical journal, Pediatrics.

"Many parents clearly don't understand the risks from various infections" these animals often carry, said Dr. Larry Pickering, the report's lead author and an infectious disease specialist at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

For example, about 11 percent of salmonella illnesses in children are thought to stem from contact with lizards, turtles and other reptiles, Pickering said. Hamsters also can carry this germ, which can cause severe diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps.

Salmonella also has been found in baby chicks, and young children can get it by kissing or touching the animals and then putting their hands in their mouths, he said.

Study co-author Dr. Joseph Bocchini said he recently treated an infant who got salmonella from the family's pet iguana, which was allowed to roam freely in the home. The child was hospitalized for four weeks but has recovered, said Bocchini, head of the academy's infectious diseases committee and pediatrics chairman at Louisiana State University in Shreveport.

Hedgehogs can be dangerous because their quills can penetrate skin and have been known to spread a bacteria germ that can cause fever, stomach pain and a rash, the report said.

With supervision and precautions like hand-washing, contact between children and animals "is a good thing," Bocchini said. But families should wait until children are older before bringing home an exotic pet, he said.

Those who already have these pets should contact their veterinarians about specific risks and possible new homes for the animals, he said.

Data cited in the study indicate that about 4 million U.S. households have pet reptiles. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, all kinds of exotic pets are on the rise, although generally fewer than 2 percent of households own them.

The veterinarian group's Mike Dutton, a Weare, N.H., exotic animal specialist, said the recommendations send an important message to parents who sometimes buy exotic pets on an impulse, "then they ask questions, sometimes many months later."

But a spokesman for the International Hedgehog Association said there's no reason to single out hedgehogs or other exotic pets.

"Our recommendation is that no animal should be a pet for kids 5 and under," said Z.G. Standing Bear. He runs a rescue operation near Pikes Peak, Colo., for abandoned hedgehogs, which became fad pets about 10 years ago.

Chicago's "BIG NIGHT" for animals

This past Thursday, Steve and I attended the Fourth Annual "Big Night" celebrity chefs event in order to help the 30,000 animals who find their way to Chicago's Animal Care and Control shelter (where I volunteer) every year. It was held at the newly restored Tiffany dome in beautiful Preston Bradley Hall of the Chicago Cultural Center. There were more than a dozen of Chicago's most renowned chefs that donated their time and incredible food; open bar, blues music by Delmark Recording artist Dave Specter and the Bluebirds; as well as a silent auction hosted by journalist Bill Kurtis. That Girl was there too!!

We had a great time - and there was an amazing turnout! This will be an event that we will definitely be going to every year.

One Year Ago...

I can't believe a year has already gone by since Razzle's passing.

I guess the weirdest part about a year going by is that, for the past year I've been able to look back and think, "oh last year at this time..." and recall an event when Razzle was still with us. It's like time stood still around here as far as Razzle's things. His cage with his igloo, wheel and his toys are all in the same spot. The 'message board' in our kitchen still has his medicine schedule on it. I just haven't wanted to let go of him.

His ashes were even still in the black container from the crematorium. I have been looking for a year for the perfect "urn", but nothing seemed perfect enough. I wanted to make one, but I could never find the right materials. I finally bought a very natural looking piece of pottery that I thought was nice, but it took me about 6 months to get used to it. It also took me that long to get the nerve to open up the black container to tranfer the ashes. I did that today, at 11:49am, the time that Razzle passed over to the Rainbow Bridge.

It was hard to see the little packet of dust and bone, but I think I needed to wait a year before I could have done this. I placed some of Razzle's blankies, along with a letter I wrote him, into the urn and carefully nestled the packet of ashes in. I think the urn is fitting for Razzle. It's very natural looking, with etchings that look like quills. I especially like the twig with the curly-q sprig. It's very original. Just like Razzle.

Today would have been Razzle's 4th birthday. July 3rd isn't the day Razzle was born (I don't know that date) but is the day that I got Razzle and my life changed forever.

Steve and I will be celebrating tonight with a special dinner and angel food cake for our little angel. I'll update more tonight.

Tonight we had a special dinner of sushi and reminisced about the first time Razzle tried shrimp. He went crazy over it and proceeded to anoint furiously, ending up with a huge frothy mess of shrimp gunk all over his quills.
So, in honor of Razzle, we had to get some shrimp maki rolls.

We were hungry when we ordered (delivery! Gotta love Chicago!), and ended up with waaay more food than we really needed. You know you ordered a lot of food when they include four sets of chopsticks.

There was, of course, birthday cake as well. Angel food cake with strawberries and cream. Mmmm. And yes, I made those little angel food "baskets" from scratch!

We sure miss you, little pumpkin. Things are just not the same without you. I hope that once in a while, you look down from your big meal-worm field in the sky and know how much we think of you and love you.

Two six-week-old African pygmy hedgehogs show just why they are considered so cute

Meet some spiky fellows who have joined the list of Britain's most sought after pets – African pygmy hedgehogs.

The cuteness of the critters means that some people are even prepared to wait a year or drive more than 500km to pick one up.

First bred in captivity in the US about ten years ago, they are now being sold here for as much as £150 each. Brighter in colour than their counterparts in the wild, they are a cross between Algerian and white- bellied hedgehogs.

Breeder Bonnie Martin, 35, from Fairford, Gloucestershire, said: 'They are incredibly cute and can fit in the palm of your hand.

'They are just as cute as a hamster or a guinea pig but they have the added “wow” and novelty factor.

'They are a very easy pet to handle and cheaper to maintain than a cat.'

She claimed they were 'convenient' pets because they sleep during the day, when you are at work, and wake up when you return in the evening.

Mrs Martin said it was hard to keep up with demand. 'I have a waiting list that is 20-strong, which is about five litters and will take about a year to clear,' she added. 'One man in Edinburgh is waiting to pick one up.'

However, Les Stocker, founder of Tiggywinkles wildlife hospital in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, was critical of the trend.

'I think it's absolutely appalling,' Mr Stocker said. 'I don't think they make very good pets. They are nocturnal and you can't cuddle them. They never tame.

'The real worry is that people will start picking up wild hedgehogs and keeping them as pets.'

Boo on Chicago!! City lifts ban on Foie Gras

Mayor Richard Daley and his City Council allies repealed the city’s foie gras ban this week before animal rights activists could mobilize and make a peep in protest.

But foie gras foes are determined not to let the mayor clip their wings, planning a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. Friday at City Hall as a demonstration against the reversal of the ban.

According to a statement from leaders of the Chicago-based Mercy for Animals, the purpose of the vigil is "to mourn the loss of the humane measure and pay tribute to horrific suffering endured by ducks."

So pretty much every weekend, I have been at Chicago Animal Control, walking and "getting rid of dogs" as Steve says (meaning, finding them new homes). It's been great! We have gotten so many dogs adopted over the past couple months, including at a Wolves Hockey Game "adopt-a-dog" night where I found Jude a new home.

Oh yes, on to the black eye!!

So on Sunday I was at the shelter, and a young couple asked to see a cute black & tan doggie named "Tara". The dog cages are secured by a metal pole that you swing up to unlock. Usually the dogs are chomping at the bit to get out and pushing on the cage door, so it can be tricky trying to hold the door so the dog doesn't escape while bending down to try and get the leash around their neck. I don't know what I did, but apparently I had the metal pole in an upward position as I was down struggling to get the leash on Tara and while she was pushing on the cage door, the metal pole came swinging down and hit me....HARD...right above my left eye. The couple gasped, "Oh my God, are you ok ??" I said, "Oh yeah...fine", although I saw stars and birds chirping around my head. But I shook it off like it was no big deal and finally got Tara out for a walk.

By the time I got home later that day, my eye was somewhat swollen and getting darker. Steve had me put ice on it immediately and it brought the swelling down. It really was not all that bad considering, and not that noticeable.

That is, until today....four days later. It's getting blacker by the minute and extending outwards. It's getting harder and harder to conceal. There's a huge purple and black mass with yellow and green colors radiating upwards. Looks like a blind person was trying to put eyeshadow on me.

Of course, now when Steve and I are in public, I make sure to stand a few steps behind him and say, "Yes dear, whatever you say...just don't get mad at me again." heheheh. Poor Steve.

MAY DAY for Downed Animals. Stop the abuse!

Today is National Call-In Day for Downed Farm Animals! The Humane
Society's recent undercover investigation of the cruel treatment of cows
at a California slaughter plant has sparked renewed attention to
the downer issue, with several Congressional hearings and bills
introduced. Now it's essential that we keep Congress focused on
the issue and ensure they take action.

At the California slaughter plant, "downed" animals -- those too
sick or injured to stand and walk on their own -- were prodded
with electric shocks, dragged with chains, rammed with
forklifts, and subjected to other egregious abuse in efforts to
forcibly move them to slaughter. Downed animals may also be left
to languish without food, water, or veterinary care, and they
are at a higher risk of carrying harmful diseases.

The following bills have already been introduced and others are
in the works:

Downed Animal and Food Safety Protection Act (H.R. 661/S. 394)
to ban slaughter of downed livestock and require their immediate
humane euthanasia.

Downed Animal Enforcement Act (S. 2770) to ban slaughter of
downed livestock and establish stricter penalties for violations
of the downer ban and humane slaughter law.

Food Safety Recall Information Act (H.R. 5762) to require
release of names of retailers and school districts that
purchased meat, poultry, or egg products subject to recall, and
ban slaughter of downed livestock.

It is critical that Congress take action on this issue quickly,
to reduce animal suffering and protect public health. When you

The wonderful CRITTERCAMP has rescued another hedgehog aptly named "BraveHog". Dear readers, this sweet little hedgehog was found in a dumpster! It appears that someone just THREW HIM AWAY!! I don't think there is any punishment too severe for people that willfully abuse animals!!

At least this story has a happy ending thanks to CritterCamp! BraveHog now has a happy, warm, loving forever home.

End the Use of Gas Chambers for Euthanasia in Illinois

A bill (H.B. 4844) has been introduced in Illinois that would end the use of decompression and gas chambers for euthanasia. Gas chambers are seeing their last days in this country and it is time for Illinois to move permanently to a more humane form of euthanasia. Euthanasia of any form is a tragedy; however, it is an unfortunate reality in the animal control field. Therefore, there is a responsibility to provide the most humane death possible when it becomes necessary.

It is critical that your state representative, Sara Feigenholtz, hear from constituents who support this legislation!

City of Chicago Animal Care & Control

Today was my first day volunteering at the City of Chicago Animal Control (CACC). I chose to volunteer here because this is the shelter that has the most volume of animals, the least amount of funds, and needs the most help. Sadly, due to the incredible volume of animals that are brought in, this is not a no-kill shelter. However, CACC does everything possible to get every animal a good, forever home. That's where the volunteers come in. Volunteers walk and play with dogs, exercising and socializing them, and making hem more adoptable. Volunteers also assist the public in finding a pet to adopt. This shelter is run by the city, and therefore runs on very limited funds. If a dog is going to get walked, or a cat is going to be adopted, it is because of a volunteer. In that sense, the volunteers are literally saving the lives of these animals.

I attended orientation and learned about the process, the rules, and then was given free reign to take out some dogs! My first few walks were with another volunteer to show me the ropes. It's a little intimidating at first, and somewhat tricky in that the number one rule is to make sure no two dogs come in contact with one another. With the hundreds of dogs at the shelter, that can be somewhat difficult! My first dog on my own was a rambunctious dog named "Brandy". We ran around the large enclosed yard and then inside the "dog run" kennel where we played ball. There were enough volunteers today that I was able to spend a good amount of time with Brandy. There are other days when some dogs do not get walked at all due to lack of volunteers.

The people I met today were really great. You can tell they are all obviously animal lovers. Everyone there wants to help these animals get a loving, forever home. I'm so glad to be a part of it!

Of course, Razzle was in my thoughts all day today. As I played with Brandy and said, "Good job!!" when we were playing in the dog run, I was reminded of how I would say that to Razzle when he was running on his wheel. I do credit Razzle as the reason I was at the shelter today. Even though the CACC doesn't have hedgehogs or exotic pets, Razzle really made me realize how many animals need our help.

I can't wait to go back tomorrow!!

Friday during my lunch hour at work, I took a walk to the art store and picked up a set of radiograph technical pens. I haven't drawn in pen & ink since college (many moons ago) but want to get more into art to offset the lack of creativity at my day job.

So I tried out my pens tonight, and what better subject to draw than my dear Razzle!!

Abandoned baby hedgehogs are too weak to hibernate

These lame baby hedgehogs are casualties of the chaotic weather.

They should be asleep for the winter - but instead they are nursing their broken bones at Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.

The RSPCA says its rescue centres are looking after hundreds of abandoned hedgehogs born during the exceptionally mild autumn and who are too small or weak to hibernate.

A baby hedgehog worse for wear after a year of chaotic weather

The odd weather has also led to a shortage of their favourite grubs, beetles, slugs and caterpillars.

RSPCA wildlife scientist Adam Grogan said: "They need to gain weight before they can hibernate."

A nice, soft fluffy coat is of little use to a hedgehog.

But poor old Glen is having to make do without any prickles - apparently thanks to global warming.

Vets believe his freak appearance was caused by the stress of missing out on his winter hibernation.

He was found in Peebles in the Scottish Borders long after he should have nodded off into a deep sleep until spring. He had a few prickles but now even they have fallen out.

Alison Pearson, who runs the nearby Border Beasties hedgehog sanctuary, said: "A lot of creatures miss out on hibernation. They don't recognise it is autumn because the weather is too warm or they hibernate and wake up after a few days of mild weather.

"We believe this little fellow missed out on his hibernation altogether and the stress of still being awake and trying to fend for himself has caused him to shed his prickles."

Mrs Pearson said she cannot rehome Glen until they grow back, adding: "He needs his prickly coat to survive. He does look a sorry sight."

I received an email today from Beth at Critter Camp to let me know they rescued a sweet little hedgehog they named Nicky. Nicky was found wandering around at a pet store. Apparently, someone bought him and decided they didn't want him anymore and just left him. What is wrong with people?? Good news is, Nicky is now in Beth's care and has a loving, forever home. Beth wanted to let me know that Nicky is using some of Razzle's items we donated a few weeks ago!! :)

And it wouldn't be like Razzle to not have any coincidences surrounding events having to do with him! The hedgie-bag that Nicky is using in these photos is the very same hedgie-bag in the following photo of Razzle. This was the photo used to create his "birthday" cake on the day he passed away. Also, is it me, or do Nicky and Razzle look strikingly alike?

I am so happy that Nicky is safe in a loving home, and feel so good knowing he is cuddling up in a warm, soft hedgie-bag that my baby once snuggled in.

I get the feeling that Razzle is pleased too.

CRITTER CAMP!!

This weekend Steve and I ventured up to German Valley, Illinois to go to CRITTER CAMP - an exotic animal sanctuary about 2 hours away from Chicago. I wanted to donate some of Razzle's things. I know Razzle would like to know his things were helping other little critters that could use them.

We met with Beth, who I swear is a saint for rescuing all these animals that have either been abused, abandoned and/or just left on her doorstep.

All of these animals have been given a second chance and so well taken care of. Beth gave us a tour and she knows the name of every single animal. I hopefully can remember some of their names. All of them were so sweet and we had so much fun meeting them all!

A Special Birthday Sign?

This afternoon, shortly after I posted the last post with the Razzle pendant, Steve picked me up early from work so we could go home and open birthday presents! As always, I was thinking of Razzle, and my birthday wish for today was "I hope he's happy."

Today was a bright sunny and warm day. Driving home, all of a sudden out of the clear blue sky, it started to rain. We looked up and saw one single dark cloud that was right over our car. There were sunny, blue skies directly ahead. Then we saw the rainbow.

It was the biggest rainbow I have ever seen - a full arch - with the bright end of the rainbow going right into Lake Michigan.
I took as many pictures as I could, and as quickly as it had started, the rain stopped and we were back in bright, clear, sunny blue skies.

Somewhere, over that rainbow, is my Razzle, and I think he was saying: Happy Birthday Mom! I'm ok and happy! And by the way, nice pendant!

Little signs

I want to keep a running record of all the "signs" I have received from Razzle! I already posted about some of them, but here are some examples of little things that have happened over the past couple months:

* The day after I posted my tribute video to Razzle on YouTube, I went out to CVS at lunchtime (already weird because I usually go to Walgreens, which is right around the corner). Not looking for anything in particular, I wandered over to the makeup section and was drawn to a particular shade of lipstick. The name of the color on the lipstick: RAZZLE.

*On September 18th, Steve was picking me up from an appointment and noticed a store across the street that had tons of little ceramic figurine animals on a table. From a distance, he noticed one of the figures had fallen off the display table and was in the shop window on the floor. He got closer and looked at it: the one animal that had fallen was a hedgehog.

*One night while lying in bed, I thought I heard "Razzle noises." I told Steve, "Shh! Listen! It sounds like Razzle!" Just then, Steve's iPhone, which was sitting on the bedside table - lit up all by itself (which has never happened). Even more ironic, the wallpaper on his phone was a close up picture of Razzle. So in the total darkness, a Razzle face illuminated just as we thought we heard him making noise.

*For some unknown reason, every once in a while, Steve's hands will itch they way they only did after holding Razzle.

*After talking to Razzle one morning and telling him I miss him, I was cleaning and lifted up something on top of a high dresser and found a quill. <3

Orphaned hedgehogs adopt cleaning brush as their mother

Four tiny orpahned hedgehogs are snuggling up to the bristles of a cleaning brush - because they think it's their mother.

The four inch long creatures are being hand-reared by staff at the New Forest Otter, Owl and Wildlife Park in Ashurst, Hants.

Workers say Mary, Mungo, Midge and Slappy get comfort from playing with the centre's cleaning brush and enjoy rubbing against it.

The smells on the brush, which is used to sweep a yard, remind the hedgehogs of their natural habitat while the texture reminds them of their mother.

Manager John Crooks, 41, said: "They are a bit like human babies - they need activities to keep them busy.

"Because they have very poor eyesight you have to appeal to their sense of smell and touch by giving them different scents and textures.

"They like natural scents and have enjoyed playing with our cleaning brushes, soil, leaves, flower pots and the like.

"They particularly seem to enjoy rubbing against the brush.

"It may sound odd but I imagine the bristles feel a bit like their mum."

He added: "Three of the hedgehogs came to us because their mum was sadly crushed by a council palette truck at one of their depots.

"They are only a couple of weeks old.

"The fourth one is a little bit older and was found wandering around a back garden in the middle of the day.

"The home owner left it alone for a while to see if it would find its mum but after a few hours it was still by itself so she brought it into to us."

The hedgehogs will be fed until they are full-sized and then they will be released back into the wild.

John said: "We are feeding them milk powder mixed with kitten food - but they don't like fish flavour - they prefer nice meaty chunks.

"When they get older they will move onto proper cat food and will occasionally be given slugs and snails as a treat.

"There has been a real surge in slugs this year because of the wet weather so hopefully that will mean a good year for hedgehogs too.

"I would urge people not to kill garden slugs with pellets because the poison will be passed on to hedgehogs and a build up of poison could be fatal.

"If the weather is good they could be released in a month or so, otherwise we will feed them over the winter so they do not hibernate and then relase them in spring."

This past weekend, Steve and I went up to Albany, Wisconsin for a little get-away. As mentioned in my earlier post, our first stop of the morning was to grab that cute hedgehog bag.

On the ride up to Wisconsin, I had my new bag in my lap and kept looking down admiring it. Steve would look over at me periodically and laugh saying, "You really like your new purchase, huh?" How could I not? The print so perfectly captures the little poses of hedgehogs that it looks as though they were drawn from photographs I have of Razzle.

The 2-1/2 hour ride up was very relaxing and we were enjoying the views of wide open spaces, horses, cows and corn.

As we were nearing our destination, I heard Steve say: "Oh. My. God." I looked out my passenger side window and saw the sign: Edelweiss Golf Course ahead.

We got to our Bed & Breakfast too early to check in, so we decided to go exploring around. The Inn Keeper suggested a cute town that was only a few minutes away, where there were coffee and gift shops. We drove over and walked around all the cute shops, deciding which one to go in first. One in particular caught my eye, and we went inside. We didn't see the name of the store until we were already at the threshold of the doorway:

On the way home, Steve asked if we could stop off at a store - he wanted to check out a line of lamps that his company reps. We walked around the store, up and down the aisles, looking for the lamps without any luck. Suddenly I spied a bunch of ceramic hedgehogs on one of the shelves and beelined over to it. Strange item to be in this particular store, so we just had to laugh. Steve didn't really like the look of these hedgehogs. I admit, they were no Razzle, but a hedgehog is a hedgehog!

We still were not able to find the lamps, however, and we continued to look around the store. I went back over to the hedgehogs to pick one out, trying to find the "cutest" one of the bunch, when I noticed one of the hedgehogs was facing in a different direction than the rest of the pack. I straightened them all out and then looked behind me to across the aisle: there were the lamps we were looking for! They were across the aisle from the hedgehogs....in the same direction that the one hedgehog was "looking". Steve had a new respect for the "ugly" hedgehogs.

Coincidence? Was Razzle with us? I'd really like to think so. :)

Hanging out with Hedgies!

A friend of mine at work (waves to Maren!) had gone into a cool little local shop and saw a purse with adorable little hedgehogs on it! You know I had to get it.

So Saturday morning, Steve and I went over to
Hanger 18, located in Lincoln Square.

Holy Cuteness.

As soon as you walk in, you can't help but squeal with delight at all the adorable items! When Steve walked in, I heard him exclaim, "Oh boy...." because he knew immediately that I could go crazy in a store like this. Lots of animal items, adorable decorations, dishware, funky cool jewelry. Oh, and of course, this hedgehog bag:

Tina, the owner, was just as sweet as her cute items and we were talking about Razzle and her dear little kitty, Nipsy, who she just recently lost as well. She was telling me about an artist that has offered to make her a photo necklace of Nipsy and she wondered if I might be interested in one of Razzle too! :)

Bought this off eBay a couple years ago. It's called a "Witches Ladder." What you do with it, I have no idea. But it has a hedgehog on the end!!!

One Month Ago

It's hard to believe that a month has gone by since the last time we saw Razzle. This morning, I talked to Razzle and told him how much I missed him. At 11:49am, I thought about how one month ago, Razzle began on his new journey. I just wonder what he's been doing. Does he remember us? Does he miss us? Does he come to visit us every once in a while?

We had a leisurely day today, and took a drive out to the 'burbs to go mini-golfing. That's when I noticed the clouds. Just like a month ago today, I saw hedgehogs playing up in the sky.

I sure do miss you Razzle.

A Sign from Razzle

Yesterday I was feeling particularly down and missing Razzle. I got home from work and went over to his empty cage. I took the canister of his cremains and sat and talked to him a while, then sang him one of his favorite songs, Edelweiss. (I change the lyrics to "Baby Raz"). I told him that I really wanted to know that he was okay. I still worry about him, even now.

Today during my lunch break, I wandered over to a Barnes & Noble. I haven't been in there in months, as the Chicago Public Library is literally right across the street. But today for something different, I headed over there to browse through the shelves. Within a few minutes, the instrumental music that was playing throughout the store caught my ear: Edelweiss.

Not a song you hear every day. I certainly have not heard that song played anywhere except by me (I just learned to play it on guitar). Funny how I happened to walk in at the very moment that song started playing.

Thank you Razzle for your sign today. Hearing that song made me feel like you are around me; that you could hear me singing your song to you; and that...wherever you are...everything is just fine.

The song I used to sing to Razzle. The words are pretty silly, I know, but it was made up on the fly one day and Razzle seemed to like it.

Beyond the Rainbow

As much as I loved the life we had and all the times we played,
I was so very tired and knew my time on earth would fade

I saw a wondrous image then of a place that's trouble-free

My own tired, failing body was fresh and healed and new
And I wanted to go run with them, but I had something left to do

"Purple Razzles"

It's been 10 days. In some ways, I can't believe 10 days have already gone by. In other ways, it feels like 10 years. I miss Razzle so much and July 5th seems so long ago now. It feels like forever since I held him. It's still hard to believe he's really gone.

On the evening of Razzle's passing, we had a "birthday" party for Razzle. Razzle's birthday was Tuesday July 3rd, but we had planned on having a birthday party that Thursday night when my friend Kathleen and her boys, Connor & Gavin were visiting. Little did we know what would happen that morning.

We still had the cake in honor of Razzle. It could be said it was still Razzle's birthday...the day he was born into an angel. I hope he was celebrating with all his new friends...

It was also the same day I got Razzle's ashes back. His ashes came in a plain black metal canister with the words "Always Remembered" in gold.

The canister is meant to be temporary, with the idea that you will buy a nicer urn. I've been looking on-line at urns and have not seen anything I felt was "Razzley". So I've decided to make my own urn. I have to think about what I want and design it, then go to the art store and get the materials I need. I'm thinking of a small wooden box, decorated with craft leaves and some mini pinecones I picked up several weeks ago when visiting the Chicago Botanical Gardens. The mini pinecones reminded me of Razzle.

It's been hard looking at a cold, metal canister knowing that the contents inside were once my baby. I haven't had the courage to open up the lid. Just looking at the canister itself has been hard enough.

The canister resides inside Razzle's igloo for now, cushioned by his favorite blankies. I kept hoping that I'd wake up from this bad dream and go over to Razzle's igloo like I did every morning, lift it up and see my sweet bundle of quills looking up at me with his cute little look that says:

"I'm FINE mom! You can leave me alone now!"

It's 11:49am....

Rest in Peace, my Angel

Today, at 11:49am, Razzle was put to rest. Truly one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make.

His health had declined to the point where he could no longer walk. I had been syringing him food and water every 2 hours since Tuesday with no improvement.

We spent the morning together and I held him and talked to him. I told him all the things I wanted him to know. When we got to the vet's office, they had a room ready for us and they gave us as much time as we needed. We were there a good long time, holding Razzle...telling him we loved him and that we'll never forget him. I told him he can come and visit me anytime.

Razzle was so weak that he could barely move. Moments before we were to let him go, I put him in his hedgie-bag so he wouldn't be scared. He was unable to move his hind legs and I had to put him in the bag and try to make him comfortable. I put my head down in front of the bag and was looking at his quills on his back, when he mustered up some strength to turn his entire body around and stuck his head out at me. I kissed him, and he turned back as much as he could before tiring out. It must have taken him every last bit of strength to do that. That little boy amazed me until the end with his bravery and courage.

We spoke to the doctor and we decided it was time. It was either that or put him in intensive care. I kept flip-flopping back and forth and wondering: but what if? What if he can get better?? The truth is, he might get better for a while, but this would happen again and again. Razzle hated being in the hospital. I couldn't do that to him again.

I thought about letting him go, and was sad for me. I thought about putting him in the hospital for God knows how long in hopes he'd get better - and I was sad for him. Then I knew.

The hardest thing I've ever done was hand him over.....

Driving home from the vets, we looked up in the sky and I swear the clouds were shaped like all different sized hedgehogs.

I love you Razzle and I'll never forget you. I hope you are somewhere in those clouds...running around free of pain and yucky-tasting medicines. I hope there is a never ending supply of shrimp and hamburgers. I hope you had a happy life with me and know that I did everything I could for you. I'm so sorry I couldn't do anymore. I hated to let you go, but I hated knowing you might be in pain even more. I hope to hold you again one day, pumpkin. You'll always be my baby.

I called Razzle's doctor...crying...she agreed it may be time.

Steve is coming home from work to get me and we are going to go in together. I'm going to spend time now with Razzle...knowing it may be our last times together.

I knew this day would hard...I've dreaded it from almost the beginning. I want to do what is right for Razzle, even if it means letting him go.

I'm going to go talk to Razzle now and let him know it's ok if he needs to leave me. He'll always be with me no matter what.

I love you Razzle.

Razzle is not any better this morning, and possibly even worse. He can barely walk or even really move much at this point. He did urinate, which is a good sign that maybe his kidneys are functioning. It gave us a glimmer of hope, but it's starting to look a bit like this is it.

The vet's office opens at 9. I will call them and talk to the doctor about our next steps. Maybe there is a slim chance there is something that will turn him around. It would be nice, but I'm not counting on it. Razzle looks so weak and tired. So hard to believe that just a few days ago he was as spunky as ever.

This was Razzle earlier today. You can see how he is hobbling and moving very slowly. He also gets tired and "plunks" down. I'm still hoping he can pull through...

On the Fence

I wish I had better news.

Razzle isn't doing any better. I've been syringing him 2cc's of Pedialyte every 2-3 hours. The doctor said to stop at 11pm. I started up again at 7:30am this morning. He hasn't shown any interest in eating. He didn't come out of his igloo at all last night.

He is very, very weak. I called the emergency vet and they, of course, say it's up to me as to whether or not I should bring him in. They said if he's not getting better (or getting worse) he might need something more (like oxygen) that I can't give him at home.

This is quite the conundrum. Going to the doctor's stresses him out big time. Stress is what got him into this situation in the first place. Do I risk putting him under even more stress by taking him in? Furthermore, I know he will not eat at the vet's and has a better shot at eating here. I can syringe feed him here without much of a struggle, where it is almost a feat of impossibility for the poor vet techs to syringe feed him! (Not to mention how taxing it is on Razzle). However, they are the experts, not me. If I do this from home, I'm not sure I'm doing this right; or giving the right amounts. They can't tell me unless they see him.

I know he's more comfortable at home and I'm doing all I can, but I don't know if it's enough and he needs more than I can do. I just don't know if putting him through the stress is going to be counter-productive. The emergency vet said maybe to wait and see how things go in the next couple hours, but I know things aren't going to change. Razzle is exhausted. I hate having to keep bugging him to give him his fluids. I can only hope that what I'm doing is correct.

Well i've pretty much decided to keep Razzle home rather than subject him to the stress of traveling and being poked and prodded. If he starts taking a drastic turn for the worse, then we'll think about taking him in.

I just gave him two more CC's of Pedialyte and he is tolerating it well. He even seems to be a little spunkier. Maybe he is turning the corner?
